Memoirs are a source of telling the truth. I have read many of them in past, but never written by a military personnel. The False Spy by Major Nirmal Ajwani of Indian Army who with among others was framed under Samba Spy Scam in which 50 army persons were arrested by the Military Intelligence authorities under the charge of spying for Pakistan.

The story starts with Major Ajwani’s early days in the Indian army. From the selection process, the author notices there the corruption starts. Major had a different picture in his mind about the army before joining. He thought the organisation is the personification of bravery, discipline, and loyalty. The author leads us to various phases of his life in army. For first six years, he serves as an artillery officer then gets a role of being a judge advocate where he tries to cool off the corruption as much as he can but faces challenges with some of the higher ranks who consider him their nemesis. One of the reason he gets trapped in a case in which there are already many casualties.

The book is a proof of concept and story of Major Ajwani’s struggles in court discussions, and collecting proofs as he tries to throw some light on the situational victims and their families, robbed of their pride, and buy their justice back for them with his efforts. To read this book, you need some familiarity with history of India and Pakistan, both after gaining their independence. The author has written flawlessly and without a doubt anyone picking this one will not enjoy their time as well but will come across the reality of harsh world.

Verdict

This book has good amount of length and heavy to consume text so do take your time to understand the context.

4 out of 5!

Note: I received this book from the publisher but that doesn’t mean my review is breaking all the rules.
