BOOK REVIEW: Happiness is All We Want by Ashutosh Mishra

Happiness is all We Want by Ashutosh Mishra
Genres: Nonfiction

Pages: 212, Paperback
Published: 2017 by Bloomsbury
Cover Rating: 3/5

Modern day life is busy. To lead a certain lifestyle, one has to be first consciously aware of the fact that one wants to lead a certain lifestyle. This certain type of lifestyle is directly proportional to the individual self. Neglecting this self may become harmful. However, the wellbeing of this self can be divided in three inter-related dependent bodies: Mind, Body and Soul. Ashutosh Mishra’s latest book, Happiness is All We Want, released earlier this year will guide you to attain the level of self wellbeing.

The book is rightly divided in three parts. Each part deeply focus on Mental, Physical and Spiritual. Before that, the author is generous enough to introduce the concept of happiness in modern life with enough emphasis and on the overall structure of the book. I would not name this book a traditional self-help since it follows a different pattern than the most self-help books out there. Author has introduced techniques that are easy to follow and can bring a drastic change in someone’s life.

Apart from sharing anecdotes of people who are portrayed when discussing a particular technique or a topic, the author also includes his own personal experience practising that technique. Fascinating? To me it is. How many nonfiction writers in this particular genre do that? I find his personal anecdotes more useful and easy to remember and does inspire me to adapt some of them in my own daily routine.

The writing style is up to the mark and professional. This piece of text surely reflects author’s own life experiences. The last part that is based on Spiritual Wellbeing is quite pragmatic. Author starts with question, Why Worry About the Soul? and then covers a vast amount of topics that are rare to find in one book. Karma, the way one sleeps (analysis), stoic adhesives such as old age, death and material wealth with mindfulness and yoga. The content is crisp and concise. I am not highly spiritual person but I have read enough to point out which one is engrossing and adaptable and which one is not.

I would recommend this book if you question what happiness is or how to find a balance between mind, body and soul.

4 out of 5
