Whenever I read a book that is takes a different concept and blend it into fiction, it excites me. Dancing Stars by Sujata Morab is one of them as the book deals with characters portraying humans beings whose fate and lives have major effect by their revolving planets (or stars or zodiac).
The theories of astrology and its effects have been interesting to mankind since the ages of Greek and Roman. The plot deals with a mixture of these astronomical projections of characters and contradicted by human psychology. The blurb of the book is so well written that I have to share it:
Shridhar and Vijaya Shastri feel their children are not their own. Have they taken births to settle their past lives’ karmic debt or is this a forewarning of some future event? Suryansh and Ameta are well settled in their lives, succeeding in their respective chosen path when suddenly they are extracted and shown a destiny so fantastic that they fall to the temptation. Whether this aberration of theirs will raise them to unbelievable heights or destroy them? Why do they agree to the outrageous scheme?
A product so ingenious and powerful that it can either elevate the lives of people to next level or it can destroy the balance of the world? Why is Guruji, a man of God, taking so much interest in worldly matters? Is he harbouring a separate agenda of his own? Lives of many are unknowingly entwined because of whims of one person.Set in cities of Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore, their final destinies await the reluctant players.
The storyline starts by describing the birth and past life of each of the main characters in this novel. This might feel like a short story since the connection or the lives of these characters are interwind quite later on in this book but I think at the right time, just before the climax of the story. Written smoothly and in third person narrative voice the plot develops with enough background information to drive itself further. I love the way author has put enough effort such that a reader will not enjoy with the development of plot and its characters but is able to appreciate the effort. Written as a fiction, it touches the importance of gems in astrology and how it could have an effect over the human mind. I think the value of the plot is clearly observable in this point.
The characterisation is the core of this novel. Their development starting from the childhood and in their adulthood is essential. There is no one character that influences the plot. I like this, and I think it takes much effort in the writer’s imagination to compete with the characters she creates and then further to focus on every one of them. The language used by the author is plain and simple. I do not much favour the dialogue formation in this book. It does tend to make the pace of the plot slow and deprecates the element of thrill from the story and concept of it.
I recommend this book to fellow readers who seek to read and complete a book over a weekend or need a travelling companion. Do consider if you are looking something different and a blend of astrology with Indian Fiction with an original concept.

Sounds interesting !!
It is 🙂
Interesting, this doesn’t sound like anything I have come across before. I like the feel of the weight of legend that the characters will have to contend with.
Long time Ste. How are you doing? Yeah, it has too. The plot is different.
I’m doing well, with books, life is always better. The more varied the books the better, as I am sure you will agree.
Indeed my friend, I do. 🙂
