BOOK REVIEW: SEX BY MADONNA

BOOK REVIEW: SEX BY MADONNA

After “viewing” it, not much words in it, I realized it’s a perfect coffee-table book. Lot’s of photographs though, and some of them are good while others reflect the superstar’s personal sexual fantasies. I was going through her bio the other day and then I learnt about this book. Seems like it was quite famous and still might be, 22 years though, since it came out and as the sub-header describes the book, “The Best BDSM & Fetish Photo-art of 20th Century”. The book is a collection of photographs rather than a poor form of literary as many people criticize on the basis of literariness. So if you do not want to read it, don’t. Because after reading, it might end up on […]

BOOK REVIEW: THE MINISTRY OF PAIN by Dubravka Ugrešić

BOOK REVIEW: THE MINISTRY OF PAIN by Dubravka Ugrešić

Posted March 19, 2014 by @amanhimself in Books, Reviews / 0 Comments

The Ministry of Pain tells the story of Tanja Lucic, an exile from Yugoslavia and a lecturer in Serbo-Croatian literature at the University of Amsterdam. I was interested in reading a story about another culture and world view that was so outside of my own. In the long run though I felt like the story didn’t really go anywhere. Dubravka Ugrešić, a literary scholar and a writer, tries to capture dolorous outcome of people trying to make a living in an alien surrounding, and her main character, Tanja Lucic, shows a similarity with the author of sharing an ideology of anti-war. Tanja’s class is filled with other Yugoslav exiles, not much younger than she, who have found temporary refuge in […]

HOW I BECAME A READER

HOW I BECAME A READER

Posted March 16, 2014 by @amanhimself in Books / 0 Comments

When I think back on how I became happily addicted to books and reading, I inevitably focus on three things: my mother, my first buy, and then came “the church of books”: my school’s library. Mother The whole credit of my reading habit (which turned out to be an enormous habit), or the gateway to the heaven of books was unlocked by my beautiful mother when I was a kid. I remember when she used to read to me from time to time and when I grew up, she would sit beside me and make me read and understand a lot of things. I can imagine that purely but titles we read together are vague in my memory. Somewhere I […]

WRITER's BLOCK #1: Self Love

WRITER's BLOCK #1: Self Love

Posted March 9, 2014 by @amanhimself in Books, Essay / 0 Comments

A writer is a person who spends more time in reading other people’s words than writing himself. You and I are both writers in that context. But there are times when we feel tortured sitting by a desk with pen (in most cases, a laptop) in one hand scratching our head with the other and a blank page in front of us. Drops of sweat cool us down only for some milliseconds. But have you ever wondered why you cannot write? Of course, we all have. We all have been through that torment phase of inability to write. And we all call that phenomenon, a Writer’s Block. Writer’s block is that phase in which we tend to think of ourselves […]

THE BOOK PARTY#2

THE BOOK PARTY#2

Posted March 8, 2014 by @amanhimself in Books / 0 Comments

To complete my target of reading 100 books this year, so far I have read 18. The party I gave last month was not bad but also not a successful one. The whole month was spent in hangover, day after day. The weather was pleasant last month, as well as my mood. Both reading and writing. Though I never spent much time in writing, but in reading as I feel I should have. Best example, I could manage to read only one out of three books which I mentioned earlier. The serious culprit is my own laziness. I am trying to find some ways to omit it but it seems to have a very powerful base inside my body and […]

THE BOOK PARTY

THE BOOK PARTY

Posted February 8, 2014 by @amanhimself in Books / 0 Comments

As being a READAHOLIC(and no, I don’t drink alcohol while reading),today, I am organizing a party with books for books. I’ve got 3 books to read this month. And I don’t think I’ll be reading more than two of them this month. I have read this month, till now, only two books in comparison to last month in which I read ten books. First, I want to thank NetGalley and Random House Publications for giving me the opportunity to read The Weight of Blood by LAURA McHUGH which has an expected publication date on March 11, 2014. I am certain that I will fulfill my job of complete reading it and giving a faithful and honest review back to the publishers. Second, is Paper […]

BOOK REVIEW: SOCCERNOMICS

BOOK REVIEW: SOCCERNOMICS

Posted January 12, 2014 by @amanhimself in Books, Reviews, sports / 0 Comments

Soccernomics by Simon Kuper & Stefan Szymanski Anything interesting to read comes in the market about football(or soccer) and being a football fan, it’s like a love at first sight. Soccernomics is the first book that tries to data-mine most of the haughty topics in football. Two authors tries to pair football and statistics and seem very fond of proving themselves by applying some methods which in the end might turn out (or in some case did turn out) right. Majority of the book focuses on big events like FIFA World Cup and European Football Championship. The book is framed chapter by chapter in the form of multiple questions. The authors then to answer these questions, use game results, demographic studies, attendance statistics, […]

THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY 2013

Posted December 31, 2013 by @amanhimself in Books / 0 Comments

Still 39 minutes left as I am writing this post. I am much obliged to a lot of things this year that I am not going to waste the precious time listing them. But most precious things to me are books. And yes, each and every I try to read more and more, and I try to learn and explore new things through them. And till now I have been successful. It is fun that this year that I set a target of reading 100 books but could not achieve it, still I manage to read 78 of them. I am also hoping to overcome this number next year with reading more and more. I also learnt a lot in […]
