Book Spotlight: The Shadow of Darkness

Congratulations! On your book, The Shadow of Darkness. I hope you won’t mind answering a few questions for my book blog and the lovely readers who are awaiting your book.

Not at all! I am glad to answer your questions and hope (the) readers enjoy reading them.

Q. What is the book (or books) you’ve given most as a gift, and why? Or what are one to three books that have greatly influenced your life?

When it comes to gifting ideas for adults, it’s hard to pick books because you don’t know their reading preferences and also the fact whether they like reading makes books a challenging choice. But if I know the receiver likes to read, I’d certainly pick one of my favorites.

With kids, there is a palette of colorful choices. Age of the receiver is also a must to take into account. The book gift should be such that the kid can sit down and read immediately, and that he should not have to wait for another or two years.

Cover Rating: 5/5

I have always loved books about books or booksellers. I find booksellers are one heck of an interesting personalities and more, they get observe equally interesting ones. Interesting personality, a bookseller? Why? ‘Cause they read books that no one else reads or majority of people do not and sometimes they write about their observations of customers/bibliophiles in their shops. The whole concept is a bit funny too.

GUEST POST: My experience with AudioBooks by Crafty Reader

Audiobooks isn’t a very new trend. It is a rather a new commercial trend. I first came across the very idea of audiobook when I was watching the movie The Reader(http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0976051/). In the movie, Hanna couldn’t read or write but loves listening to stories. So, throughout her life, her lover records readings of books and mails them to her. Of course, by the time movie was released, audiobooks were already in the market but not as popular as they were are now. Yet, it was still a curiosity and alien idea to me, until a few days back, when I planned on reading 120 books in 365 days.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW: Maia Duerr

Published: December 2017 by Parallax Press

I recently, got a chance to have a QnA with Maia Duerr, the author Work That Matters.

Q. What is the book (or books) you’ve given most as a gift, and why? Or what are one to three books that have greatly influenced your life?

Two books that have informed how I move through the world are Zen Mind, Beginners Mind by Shunryu Suzuki Roshi, and Let Your Life Speak by Parker Palmer. Sometimes I give each of those as gifts to dear friends, knowing what a difference theyve made in my life! Both those books invited me into an experience that was deeper than the words on the page. Zen Mind, Beginners Mind was not actually authored by Suzuki Roshi (in the sense of written word)  it was taken from transcripts of his talks over the years at San Francisco Zen Center, and lovingly edited by his students. So the immediacy and intimacy of his teachings is transmitted in the pages of the book. In Parker Palmers book, he gives a very honest account of his lifes story, particularly in relation to his vocation. Both books gave me a sense that it is the darkest periods of our lfe that are actually the biggest gifts to us, if we can learn the practice of being present to them and learning from them.

Q. In the last five years, what new belief, behavior, or habit has most improved your life?

Well, as a Zen practitioner, I dont often think any more in terms of improving my life. Its just this, whats right in front of me, and theres no more ‘improved’ version of me to get to. It’s about being present to all of who I am and what’s in the world around me. So I can’t quite answer your question the way it’s asked, but I would say that my meditation practice has been the foundation for living my life in a more intentional way. And when I’m able to do that, every part of my life feels more authentic and meaningful.
