This was my seventh James Patterson’s book and I would say he writes better when he is not co-authoring. There were times when I read his Alex Cross‘ series or Women’s Mystery Club series and when I read his Private series or the Mistress. The difference would be in front of you. The difference is like between the day and the night. This fact may be true that he has sold more than combining Stephen King, Dan Brown and John Grisham, also, 19 consecutive No. 1 New York Times bestselling novels, and holds The New York Times record for most bestselling hardcover fiction titles by a single author but books like Mistress, it feels gone are those days when James Patterson was a real Page turner. It is just not his class or I would say, it’s not him. It’s a disgrace the way his books are written nowadays. Mistress being lengthy novel of 448 pages, the plot and the story are acceptable however the way of telling the story, the way of portraying the first person narrative was not good at all. Actually it was pretty bad, no reader would like to read the way this book is written.
In the past, I have always enjoyed Patterson’s books immensely. I used to like his style of short chapters and page turning essence his books had but now it seem, What the hell am I reading? It’s better if I read my textbooks.
After reading 100 pages you would realize that the main character of the book, Ben, might be an interesting character in this psychological thriller but reading further you will realize that before you just had a bad thought. Though I agree, it’s a fast read but I had to force myself to finish it. The character of Ben often goes on and on about mundane facts which have nothing to do at all with the storyline. And due to this he is an annoying character. I am disappointed with this one. Looks like, I’ll have to go back to Alex Cross or Women’s Mystery Club.
I would advise not to buy and waste your money. Either loan it from a library or borrow from the person who has it.
I won’t recommend this one to anyone, and if I do… Dear Devil, I shall rot in hell.
Haha,I hope he doesn’t ever read this. Was it really that bad?
It is very disappointing!
It’s always a crap shoot when Patterson “co-authors” a book. This trend has led to a lot of disappointment with others too like Clive Cussler. I don’t know how these pairings actually work. Maybe they’re like the William Shatner-Ron Goulart books. Shatner says he writes an outline and Goulart takes it from there. However it’s done it all comes out second rate or below.
I agree,co-authoring doesn’t work for him. I have no idea how he manages but I also believe that he gives an outline and then the co-author writes the whole. Patterson promised with 11 different co-authors and it’s going to finish soon,I hope.
These works feel like total amateurs!
I didn’t know those sales stats about Patterson v Grisham etc. Quite staggering! SD
Haha, They are SD! 🙂
What has been your favorite mystery?
I have to say Sherlock Holmes by Conan Doyle and John Rebus series by Ian Rankin! 🙂
What’s yours?
I gave up on any of Patterson’s books other than Alex Cross years ago and I’m a few behind on that series.
I’ve only read two books on Alex Cross series. I am planning to pick the series again next year! How did you find Alex Cross?
It’s been so long ago I can’t even remember – maybe when I was in a mail order book club? Totally giving away my age!
Hahaha, don’t worry. When I’ll be reading the, I’ll be sharing all my views on them with you! 🙂
I only read one James Patterson novel on holiday last year. I wasn’t impressed but I wish I had more time to read more of his books; I have heard such great things about him. I did learn from him to include chapter one of the next book at the end for free though Ha! Ha!
His Alex Cross Series is good. I have read few of those. But this particular, and also those which he co authors are not so good.! Which one you read?
This book was difficult not to put in the garbage in the first chapter. I struggled through th because I am a fan of Patterson and kept hoping it would get better. It will be a long time before I bother picking up a Patterson book again. I think he owes his fans an apology.
I agree with you! His solo work is efficient and worth reading! Have you tried Alex Cross series?
I know what you mean. It seems they are trying to market his name and his original writing that made his name gets lost in the mix. It also seems too often with popular authors that they don’t edit like they should.
What you’re saying can be a possibility but I think they are just using his name to make money!
I have been surfing on-line greater than three hours these
days, but I never found any interesting article like yours.
It’s pretty worth enough for me. In my opinion, if all website owners and bloggers made

You wrote a good review. Even though you didn’t like the book, you gave it a good constructive review and if James Patterson reads it I’m sure he’d agree, because even bad reviews can be good. 🙂 Personally, I have never read any of his books and I should.
Thanks a lot for your appreciation, I always try to express my own feelings on reading a book.
There are some good books written by him, you should try Alex Cross series too 🙂

He is such a good author, it’s such a letdown. I was planning on getting to this sometime but yeah. No.
You’ll be glad on not reading this, and yes he his a good author. His standalones are one of the good books!
Colaboratins are always tricky, and few work, IMHO. Women’s Mystery Club was the exception to that rule, but I also preferred James Patterson’s work when he did his own writing. I know these arrangements are becoming more and more popular, but they just don’t feel legitimate to me; call me old fashioned, LOL!
No, I totally agree with you. These kind of arrangements are suitable for non-fiction and text books but in fiction it never works!
I read one Patterson novel on holiday – I picked it up in the airport on the way out, thinking it would fill in time between a book about Alexander the Great and The Sparrow – I was wrong!
It was like sticking my head in a garbage can and trying to sleep with the flies. I didn’t enjoy it much!
Was he co-authored with some one else? Mostly his co-authored books are not good. I have tried two or three. But his Alex Cross series books are good! 🙂
Hi Aman, first of all thanks for liking my post. I’ve read several Alex Cross novels (not all though) and I don’t agree that they’re all great. In my opinion they are too similar, one book is just like the other, if you know one, you know the others too. But if you like this kind of novel and his style of writing, I recommend Tess Gerritsen to you!
Well I agree on the point that Alex Cross novels are similar, but they are surely better than this one. Thanks for the recommendation I’ll surely check Tess Gerritsen!
I love reading through a post that will make people think.
Also, thank you for allowing me to comment!
You’re welcome! 🙂
I like to read to James Patterson books by this one,Mistress, I couldn’t get into it. I’ve have so far read 100 pages and i have been diappoointed with it. The last one I read was called ” 12th of Never” and I really enjoyed it.
Yes, this book is quite disappointing! I’ll suggest you to read some other book written by him.
Good post. I certainly love this website. Stick with it!

Thanks a lot for visiting 🙂
Touche. Outstanding arguments. Keep up the good spirit.
I have 3 bookshelves of James Patterson books, and I agree with you, when he co-authors, it is not his best work. I do think this is what enables him to put out a new book in what appears to be a 3-4 week time frame 🙂
Yeah, every year he comes out at least with 3-4 books and that is his regime! 🙂
I think Patterson is writing books based on his reputation now. It must be nice. The orples are off pouting because they aren’t as popular. 😉
I only came across this author when he co-wrote ‘Private India’ with India’s Ashwin Sanghi.
I had the same grudge against Sanghi – he was better off writing alone.
A case of ‘Two many cooks spoiling the book?’
Yes, that’s the case. I haven’t read Private India but I have read two other books in Private series that are also co-authored and not attractive. 🙂
