BOOK REVIEW: Equations of Being by Ashutosh Gupta

Pages: 170, Kindle Edition

Published: September 2017 by Notion Press

Cover Rating: 5/5

Equations of Being – A being who Gathered Moss written by Ashutosh Gupta is an artistic work, rich in words and thoughts that showcase fragments of his interactions on elements of life. It is a book that will make you thoughtful, and cozy.

The title of the book is rightly justified. It is a collection of thoughts on diverse themes and times in the author’s life. Being a mixture of reality and imagination and it has a unique way of reciting the content on different subjects such as life, faith, man, woman, God, feminism and the harmful manner the society works. His words try to fill the vacuum we create, at any point in our life, irrespective of the age. I do not think a specific genre should be tagged with this type of book. There are many points in the text where I feel “this is quotable”, thus signifying the rich writing.

The book is divided in sixteen chapters some of are interestingly entitled. Starting from writer’s own journey about writing, and recognising himself as an artist, he then discusses existence in depth by devoting almost two to three chapters on the subject matter. Any Sartre fan will love this. The author further moves to emotions such as love and then onwards to women, and developing a basic understanding of feminism.

The writing style is beautiful and excellent. At many points while reading it, I acknowledge the way the author plays with simple abstract words into something deeply meaningful. Originality of the context of course comes from writer’s own experiences whether real or imaginative. The in-depth exploration of emotions is not easy to explore in words with a smooth writing style and he has done that. I cannot tell you much about the plots of fragments this book contain since it will be a dishonesty towards any reader who might feel attracted enough to grab it. The themes I discussed earlier are enough for a reader to know what this book comprise of. If one is familiar with the concept of existentialism, he can clearly see the signs of that.

I will recommend this book to anyone who is fond of existentialism, though provoking books, or someone looking for self-analysis. However, this book will take some amount of your time and I think it is worth it.
