Chapter 4

A SHORT CUT TO MUSHROOMS

Synopsis:

This chapter advances the suspense. When the Hobbits get up in the morning, they find that the elves have already left, leaving breakfast for them. Frodo decides to take a short cut to the Brandywine river, where Merry was supposed to meet them that day; this was done partially to arrive there sooner, and partially to avoid being seen by the Black Riders again. Indeed they notice one on the road just after they leave it.

After a long and unpleasant passage through the woods they reach the estate of Farmer Maggot, who is known for setting his dogs on any trespassers who come to pick his mushrooms (as Frodo himself had experienced in his youth).

Yet he turns out  quite friendly, especially as he knows Pippin quite well, he tells them that a strange and frightening black rider was asking him questions about a Baggins earlier that day.

After the supper, he offers to drive them to the ferry. And thus the chapter ends with Farmer Maggot good-naturedly supplying Frodo with a basketful of mushrooms for his journey.

  1. Farmer Maggot is a great character, and a good example of why the book is worth reading. There are so many interesting characters that Tolkien created, but never made it into the film adaptations. Tom Bombadil and Radagast are two other characters that deserve attention, but aren’t in the movies.

I’m enjoying the posts, and it makes me wish I had time right now to re-read the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings, but I have a suggestion. I think you should post your thoughts about each chapter after you summarize it. I like the reminder of what happens in the book, but I’m also curious about what you think about each section and how it fits into the larger story 🙂

    • Yeah, I liked the character of Tom Bombadil a lot, but its a bit disappointment that it never reached movie. I agree with you.

I will take your advice under consideration. I try to do that a little a bit in every post. But I guess you’re right, I should right more about my thoughts more. 😀

      • Yeah, it doesn’t have to be a lot, just a few sentences where you say why you like or dislike a chapter, and maybe a favourite part of the section. Then I can agree or disagree with you, and say why 🙂

        • Yeah, I have started to do that, by writing a few lines in the end of the post, in italics, lookout for them and I am excited to discuss those points with you too 😀 😀
