The Tao of Fully Feeling is the best companion I have found to read in the Dark Times.

I got this book as a recommendation from another blogger who convinced me that Pete Walker’s writing is extraordinary. On reading the book, not only I found his vocabulary pleasing but as well as his writing style and the message he wants to convey through his written words.

The subject matter of this book is all about acknowledging one’s emotional intelligence. If you remember Daniel Goleman’s bestseller and and one of the first books on Emotional Intelligence or why EQ matters more than IQ, this book is written for modern times and is a step ahead. While Daniel talks about the science of brain and the origin of Emotions or the process of emoting, Walker in his book speaks for all of us. He share his own stories for in the form of anecdotes on how repaired his own emotional nature with enough pragmatic advices and scenarios for us to read.

Last month was all about work and productivity. The older me (self two years ago) would be scared of the term of productivity. Since the start of this year, I am reading and learning about how in this new economy one can manage work-life balance and a lot depends on being productive since productivity is directly proportional to your well-being which comes from you being a happy person.

I am a strong believer in effective communication skills which are vital for success. One thing I can assure you from my experience is that loud, bitter and violent communication never leads to fulfilment. Marshall Rosenberg’s Nonviolent Communication is a book about avoiding just that. He takes the reader through all the intricacies of working on what to say and how to say it so that one’s words lead to peace, not bitterness or violence. Another aspect of the book is that it also speaks to the essential need for developing compassionate communication with one self.

This not the first Alan Watts book I have read. To read this one, I made myself familiar with his writing and philosophy by reading his other books such as The Wisdom of Insecurity (on someone’s recommendation in past) and listening to his teachings in past few weeks. It’s important to know your subject in most cases. In this case, even if you aren’t familiar with Watts’ philosophy, I’d suggest you to go ahead. However, a bit of familiarity only embraces curiosity. The title is the essence of this book, might point to another domino piece in the self-help genre but I can assure you that this text which was first published in 1955 holds the same amount of value and wisdom today as it did back then.

Lack of confidence is one of the reason why bloggers don’t publish their posts. Especially, in this age of information overload, we tend to gather much information without much effort about the needed topic or content interesting to us but due to lack of confidence your best post has never been published yet. We all struggle with the confidence at times when it comes to hitting the publish button. This book is a part of The School of Life series and irrespective of that, it gives some good insight on ‘Emotional Health’ which make this book a good starting point, as the title suggests. James Oliver starts his book by defining emotional health as

Emotional Health is the sense that what is happening, is happening now.

Sometimes the clear and simple words hit you hard and that’s what I realise after reading the first lines of text in this book. I liked Oliver’s style of opening the text with what matters. There’s no abstraction in that. Most books of this kind are pretty and heavy in text but they lack where it matters most: straightforwardness. Often they are not plain-spoken, the words must strike the reader at the right place in his mind.

Happiness is a part of abstraction which consume our daily lives. It is the most arbitrary expression that has different set of meanings to different people. Satisfaction, joy are subsets of it. And this what James Oliver suggests in his book. Rather than to seek an abstraction, we should cultivate our own emotional health.
